I Can BREATH! and Other Stuff

November 21, 2009

Finally, the snot has lifted! I will never take breathing for granted again.
Life here on The Hill has been kind of quiet. I haven’t felt inspired to write about anything lately either.
I’ve begun the Christmas decorating at Chesley already. I can’t believe that December is almost here!

Seymour the rooster, who lost his flock in a bloody coup has come back home and is living with Mr, Kowalski’s hens. He has completely lost his sight in one eye and I’m wondering if he isn’t going completely blind. I know he can see some things but he seems to run into things more than he should.
It’s nice to hear him crowing out there in the morning.
The weather report today is calling for a nice sunny, mild day so I’m going to try to get some things done out in the gardens and get a few weeds pulled or something.
Have a good weekend everyone and please don’t forget to VOTE FOR SUZANNE!! CLICK HERE TO VOTE

*SIGH*

October 31, 2009

I’m hosting a pity party for myself today. I don’t indulge in them very often but right now I’m just letting it happen.
Tomorrow will be a hard day. We’re going to bury Paddy underneath the crab-apple tree that was right next to her enclosure. She loved to eat those crab apples.
Today we cleaned out her enclosure. Many tears were shed.

The worst part of today though… I went out to Mr. Kowalski’s coop to check on them and found Mr. K. dieing. I picked him up and already knew that there was nothing I could do for him, so I just held him until he took his last breath.
Mr. C and I buried him on the back hill.
I just don’t know how much more my heart can take.

Larn sumthin new ever day

June 27, 2009

(That title was a poor attempt at a long slow southern farmer’s drawl)

Anyway, I’ve had chickens for quite a number of years now and this is the first time this particular issue has come up!
chickens09 028

Poor Kowalski! I don’t even know how the poor guy ate with that over grown beak! With his ‘hairdo’ I didn’t see this going on until recently.
I knew that other bird breeds need beak trims sometimes but none of the other chickens have ever had this problem.

So I googled (or as DaMaMa would say “goggled”) trimming a chickens beak and got the info I needed. Just like trimming a toenail it said.
So I borrowed the crazy dog lady’s dog nail trimmers (cuz cat trimmers seemed to small for the job), collected Mr. K and prepared myself for a battle roy-al!

Well let me tell you, it was a TOTAL…

… non-event. The boy sat as still as a statue and never even squawked! Such an angel he is!
So here’s how he looks now…

No blood was involved for either of us so I pronounce the procedure a resounding success!
He’s so much handsomer now after his nose job don’tcha think?

A Good Egg

May 11, 2009

Neighbor Mike went to visit his family so Mr.C and I are looking after the horses and chickens while he’s away.
It’s no hardship since I regularly go to see how Seymour is doing.
Apparently one of the hens must really like him cuz she’s layin some mighty fancy eggs…

That is not photo shop magic… that is eggsactly how she layed it!

A Morning Stroll On The Hill

May 10, 2009

We had a busy day yesterday working on a fencing project, but before we got started I took a morning walk with the camera.
I headed down the hill…

To visit the chickens…

And got a hearty “good morning!” from Truman…

And also from Gus…

Then Tux met me at the bottom of the hill and we went back up…

to check on the frogs…

and to see what flowers are getting ready to bloom…

or which ones already are…

Then we went to work, and took down this…

So we could build this…

in order to enclose Paddy’s enclosure to keep any curious kids from bothering her.
So now we have a fenced in sideyard and more gardening possibilities!

I’m thinking about painting the fence… white or green…????

Seymour’s New Digs

April 10, 2009

It became clear to me on Tuesday that Seymour wasn’t going  to try to regain his alfa-rooster spot from Truman. He hadn’t left the inside of the coop since Saturday. I could tell he was depressed and had completely lost his spirit. Both of his eyes looked swollen as well, so I gathered him up and put him into the hospital/holding pen that we have under our back deck. After putting ointment in his eyes and more anti-biotic cream on his war wounds, he  began to perk up and even crowed a few times.

I kept him there until this morning. On a side note, this pen is directly under our bedroom window, only about 20 feet below us and his crowing hardly bothered us at all so me-thinks the neighbors who are a full acre away from the regular pen are being a bit overly-dramatic about the noise he makes.

I digress…

Anyway, this morning his eyes looked better and he was very fiesty so I decided to take him over to meet his new girls. Neighbor Mike said it was fine to let him keep company with his hens.  I gave his chicken coop a good tilling and clean out and put all new fresh straw inside and out on Monday.

The introduction was a big success…  It was like Seymour’s spirit and spunk magically returned! It was a happy sight.  One of Mike’s hens, Alice, took an immediate shine to him and wouldn’t leave his side… so cute!

The rest of the girls seemed to think pretty highly of  him as well…

Now here’s my proud old boy back to his normal self…

The proximity of Mike’s coop to our house should allow us to still enjoy his mighty crows.. and hopefully all of the neighbor’s will still be able to um…. enjoy them as well!

A Coup in the Coop!!

April 7, 2009

This past weekend on The Hill was full of activity; not only at the house but down in the chicken coop as well.

Seymour, our big, beautiful Buff Orpington rooster has always been the undisputed king of the coop. He was a master protector of his hens which necessitated me bringing a rake into the run with me to protect myself.  He wasn’t really mean per se,  just very protective of his girls.  Most of the time he knew that I was the true boss and just made a big show of loud clucking and strutting in the pen while I was doing whatever I needed to do. But as soon as I left the pen and shut the gate behind me, he would charge the gate at full speed and crow loudly to tell everyone that certainly he was responsible for chasing me away!

Every once in awhile though he got a little bit braver and tested me with a charge and an attempt to spur me. At those times I would make a point of capturing him and hanging him upside down by his feet just to remind him of the pecking order here on The Hill. This did just enough to give him the idea, but didn’t humiliate him enough that he didn’t go right back to his loud displays of  bravery.

On Saturday, Mr C. informed me that Seymour didn’t look right and that he wouldn’t leave the coop. So after the cousins left I went down to check him out. It didn’t take long to figure out what had happened…

He had been the victim of a bloody coup!

Oh the irony of the words printed on the 2×4 behind him!

While his injuries are not serious, clearly his spirit is broken. He barely even protested when I picked him up to treat his wounds.

The evil takeover was master-minded by Truman the traitor!

chickens09-004

Truman is a beautiful Ameraucana rooster that we purchased along with several hens. We we’re told that Truman was a hen as well… we named ‘her’ Trudy. As Trudy began to grow up, it became clear that she was a he and hence the name change to Truman. Up until this past weekend he was very  shy and polite and basically stayed out of Seymour’s way.  We always marveled that Seymour was very tolerant of him and basically ignored him. Although it would have been the natural thing to do,  Seymour  didn’t attempt to fight with him or drive him away from the girls.

Life was peaceful. Until Truman decided that he wanted all of the hens for himself. He did not show Seymour any of the tolerance that was given to him!  Oh no, now he is the one strutting amongst the girls…

While poor old Seymour cowers inside the coop…

chickens09-007

It’s so sad.

We may have to ask neighbor Mike if one of our boys can come and keep company with his hens in order to give poor Seymour his dignity back.

Yeah right!

January 28, 2009

You didn’t actually  believe me when I said I’d be sitting inside watching the snow falling while sipping a cup of tea did you?  HA! There are CHORES to be done on the hill! First I went and got the paper and trudged through  this…

100_1634

Kinda pretty, but I gotta do what I gotta do…

100_16361

Keep in mind that I’m not driving right now so this was all for the benefit of Mr.C.    ALL done  with a hand shovel too! Guess I can declare myself healed from the ‘unfortunate incident’.

Then it was down to check the chickens… they are pretty distraught by these unfavorable weather conditions. Not a single chicken print in the snow!

My peacock doesn’t seem the least bit concerned…

The Blue Girl hollies sure do look pretty with a dusting of snow to show off the beautiful red berries…

It iced overnight so I’ll be at home sipping tea all day again today. Yeah right!

Redneck Sunroom

January 24, 2009

Today is the first day since my ‘unfortunate incident’ that my body hasn’t felt like I had just put in  a marathon session with Chuck & Christie on the Total Gym so I decided to go out and get some farm chores done. (that would be Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkly for those of you that haven’t seen the infomercials)

I went down to clean out the chicken coops but then I realized that frozen chicken poop sticks to the floor, isn’t that messy and it doesn’t stink! Decided to just throw another layer of straw on top and call it clean. Then I noticed that Seymour the evil rooster had what looked like to be a touch of frost-bite on his wattles so I decided to put a tarp along the north side fence of the coop run to give them a windbreak of sorts. Did the same thing on the banties coop too. Don’t know why the stupid birds don’t just stay inside when it’s this cold!

Then I went up to check on Mr. Kowalski and his ladies. They don’t need a windbreak because I’ve already given them their very own redneck sunroom!  My oldest brother who happens to be a master woodworker built the coop this past spring but it isn’t exactly roomy in bad weather so I decided to cover their outdoor run for the winter so they could have some leg room. It stays downright toasty in there!

This b K-Wal’s crib….

(K-Wal is what we call him when we’re feeling particularly hip-hop-cool)

This is Augustus II, our banty rooster… he’s mighty handsome…

His tail is beautimous…

And this is Truman who we were told was going to be a  TRUDY… he started out kind of homely but is growing into a real beaut…

Turn back the clock!!!

April 11, 2008

That farm auction sure was fun. But I wish we had never gone, and never bought these dang chickens (except for Mr Kowalski… I LOVE  Mr Kowalski!)

So far they have been a nightmare! As I mentioned before, three of the four game hens are sick with respirtory infections and have needed to be seperated from the other chickens  to prevent infecting them, BUT they can’t be put into crates with each other because they fight. Not just a little pecking either… they rip each other’s combs and draw serious blood! I’m going to have to re-home these girls, I didn’t do enough research into this breed and they just don’t belong in my peaceful little egg-laying community. They need to be somewhere free-ranging.  I don’t even want to add up what I’ve spent on antibiotics and vaccines for these birds only to have to turn around and give them away. I’ve thought about just turning them loose to free range around here, but we’re already deep in the dog house with our neighbors to the left because of Seymour’s crowing… our luck, they would free range right over to their house and roost on their deck right over their hot-tub and poop all over it.

On top of all of that, I went down to the coop to feed the other day and found poor Mr. Kowalski had been attacked and was a bloody mess. So now he too is in the garage infirmary… in yet another crate!  Seymour is the likely culprit although it could be Bess since she has been a royal biatch to everybody establishing herself as the top hen.  He’ll be ok I think, but now we have to build him his own place since I can’t risk putting him back in with the others. THAT, of course means, we have to get him a couple of his own girls too… can’t have him getting lonely! ;-)

The last but not least complaint is that Seymour, who had been good-natured and just a big sweet boy has started to turn mean! The last two days I’ve gone in the coop he has charged at me and tried to attack my legs! I don’t think he’s hopeless, he does back down quickly… guess I’ll just have to spend time with him and bribe him with treats.

SIGH… NO MORE FARM AUCTIONS!!!!
