On the blog wagon
January 21, 2008So here I am on the blog-wagon. I had started one on my ‘MySpace’ page but I’m going to move that first post over to here.
I’m just going to talk about the interesting things that happen probably only to me. People always tell me that I should write down all of my crazy animal stories so that’s what I’m going to try to do here. Along with any fun stuff that comes up in the gardens or down in the chicken coop.
So, here’s a copy of my first blog post ever from Jan.15, 2008
Yesterday was my first day volunteering at the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. Working with wild animals has always been a dream of mine.
It was AWESOME! I went with Peggy (the head of the center) to the vet to have a Coopers Hawk, a Sharp Shinned Hawk and a Screech Owl x-rayed. I learned how to put those little eye hoods over the bird’s heads to keep them calm. During the transport one of the hawks managed to injure itself with it’s own talon. So, on my first day I was the anesthetist for a hawk while he was being stitched up and x-rayed!
I also learned about feeding the animals… I have to cut up dead mice with scissors… YUK! She didn’t make me do it yesterday thankfully, but I guess I’ll have to get over the ickyness of it.
There is a light load of animals right now… a few raccoons, a couple of possums, several types of hawks, squirrels and a few owls. The busy time is in the spring when animals are more active and having babies ect.
The hawk I rescued at Chesley on Christmas day ( I call him Rudolph the Red-Tailed Hawk) is doing pretty well but making slow progress. His legs are still paralyzed but it appears that some of the movement in his toes is returning. He eats like a pig!
I’m so going to love doing this!
Here is a link to a video of the wildlife biologist that I’m working with at the center.
